Stories and Recollections
Many members of our family have stories to share, and we want to capture these memories. For the younger generations, in many of the stories, "Grandma" refers to Eva Peck.
(by Joy Dorman) Wolf Dorman and Lillian Dorman, his wife, our great, great grandparents, came from Lithuania to Kiev, Russia. They had eight children, Bessie and Samuel, both of whom never came to America, Benjamin, our great grandfather who settled in Baltimore, Morris, who went to Meriden...
(by Elaine Schultz) Mom worked in a department store and a candy shop. She helped Grandma Beber raise the brothers and sisters when Grandpa died. She did not talk much about the early years; it must have been hard...
(by Susee Miller) I remember sifting in the den with Grandma when she began to recount a story of her youth. She related it without sentiment or bitterness. I was, therefore, wholly unprepared for the ending which I found startling and disturbing...

(by Gloria) When Grandma lived on Broadway, a neighbor told the Jewish Welfare Group about the family's poverty. A rep came to grandma's door and offered help. Grandma said they were fine. However, Aunt Lubah was standing near-by and interrupted...
(by Michael Peck) It's hard to write about parents who you don't remember. They died in 1949, and I was 2-1/2. They were so young. Life was so promising. However, God and a Bolivian airplane pilot had other plans. Dad, whose real name is Nathan Paul Pecker...
(by Gloria Miller) Uncle Earl lived at Rose and Hawk's home on Wythe Avenue after Shelly left. When he decided to marry Aunt Leslie, he brought her to Richmond to meet the family. They arrived after Susee, Steve and Gloria were asleep. So the next morning, the 3 little ones were...
(by Shelly Ruben) After Grandpa Sam died in 1924, Grandma met and married Philip Beber, a widower with three older children. He was a big gruff man but not as tough as he sounded. Elaine and I remember him sitting in the evenings reading...
(by Joyce C.) It all started when an athlete from Ruxton Ave. (Nat), met a model from Broadway Ave. (Zel). They got married and had Peck's Restaurant. There was a whirwind honeymoon in Miami, FL. followed by memorable summers in Camp Tamiment.
(by Ellen) I'm trying hard to remember. I remember Grandma teaching me curses - like "gezinta hay" - go to hell - and my mother was mad at Grandma for teaching me phrases like that. What else? Grandma told me she was dragged out of her house and made to watch the Cossacks murder her brother...
(by Rose) "The year was 1938, January 9 was the date When Nat took Zel for his mate, and Zelda did choose Nate. A wonderful wedding, a honeymoon grand And off they went to Florida land..."
(by Joel Peck) I don't recall Rhona living at your house, but she confirms your recollection. Her stay at your house stemmed indirectly from the accident. The accident occurred on May 24, 1952. Dad spent several weeks in the hospital in Newport News. Rhona, David and I remained at our house...
(by Elaine and Shelly) What happy times... The family together built the house, especially May, Willie and Howard. They would go every weekend until it was finished. It had a long living room where all the kids would sleep on cots...

(by Michael Peck) I think Dad’s discharge paper contain a clerical error. I hope that this was the only error. The information elsewhere seems accurate. The two page document written in a beautiful flourish of its day...
We need someone to write stories about Peck Iron and Metal, Richmond, Portsmouth and Norfolk.
One evening in the late 1940's at the Suburban Country Club in Portsmouth Virginia, the Peck clan had gathered to celebrate their togetherness at one of the club's Saturday night bashes. As the evening progressed, and after a few scotch and waters...
(by Paul H. Peck) As I write this I am in Baltimore to pick up the next generation of Peck boys who continue the tradition of populating the roles of Camp Skylemar. Along with the rest of the Julius Peck grandsons...
I was in the company of The Rebbe (don't ask me why he is not referred to as the Rabbi) maybe a dozen or so times, most of which were to receive one of the many thousands of "dollars" he personally handed out every Sunday to anyone visiting him...
